BRL / intense use of
telecommunications
BRL (Compagnie nationale de la
région de Bas Rhône et du Languedoc) has built and operates a set of
hydraulic facilities, ensuring local drinkable water needs and
irrigation over an area of 130,000 hectares. The East perimeter, ranging
from the Rhône to Montpellier, is served by a 12-km supply canal; at its
end is the Pichegu pumping station (one of the biggest in Europe) with a
capacity of 75m3/s. It supplies two canals of 80 km and 26 km, from
which 55 forwarding stations and surpressors pressurize the irrigation
networks. The Center-East also operates 3 drinkable water treatment
stations, serving part of the coastal and rural zones of the Gard region,
as well as several water treatment stations.

In 1996, the facilities’ remote management system
having become obsolete, BRL decided to replace it with a modern system,
appropriate for the size of the facilities and the reliability of the
service to be offered to their customers. Following a tender, PERAX was
chosen to supply the new system.
This system comprises 55 P200X remote management
stations, connected with programmable controllers, and 6 TOPKAPI
supervision stations:
the "Pichegu" server station is
connected to 47 pumping stations through lease line or RTC modems and
P200X stations, to the secondary supervisors and offices of the
operating center through a lease line, and ensures on-call management
using a text to speech, via access to a 3RP shared resources radio
network, the RTC network and KOBBY pagers
the secondary station is connected with
8 pumping stations through lease lines and P200X stations, and exchanges
information with the "Pichegu" supervisor via a lease line
the station in the operating center
offices is connected with the Pichegu site through a lease line
the three client stations in Pichegu
are connected with the server through a LAN.
This application, sized for approximately 4000
variables, illustrates perfectly the communication features of TOPKAPI,
which manages simultaneously 9 serial ports on the "Pichegu" station :
the station to station remote lease
lines
communication with the remote
management stations, with dynamic allocation of the telephone line and
modem, ensuring higher rate of availability
on-call processing over several media (text
to speech, paging, Minitel).
