Introduction to AREAL
  • Creation : 1989
  • Know-how: software development in the field of industrial process automation
  • SCADA systems under DOS since 1983
  • 1st French editor of a SCADA software for Windows (1st application running under Windows in 1991)
  • Now leader in the fields of water sector and remote supervisory (building automation, networks,…)
3
What is a SCADA Software?
  • Replaces an electrical control panel
    • Display (lights, Vu-meters, graph trends)
    • Command (buttons)
    • Faults announcement (buzzer)

4
What have SCADA software been
designed for?
    • Local field networks
    • Quasi real time transfer of information
    • (transfer delay < 1 second)
    • Time stamping of events by the computer: time accuracy of 1 second is coherent with human reaction delay.
    • Local diffusion of process information: factory model

5
LAN/Scattered information
    • Factory model: information available locally (LAN)

TOPKAPI ’s original features
  • Custom spreadsheet:
    • No programming language
    • Speed (precompiled formulas, no slow down as with scripts)
    • Database processing level (<>mimics)
  • Powerful events/alarms manager
  • Efficient graph trend tools
  • True network Client/Server architecture: application server
9
Application Client/Server
vs Data Client/Server
  • Data Client/Server:

    • Application 2 asks for data of application 1

    • Addresses are different in applications 1 & 2
10
Application Client/Server
vs Data Client/Server
  • Application Client/Server:

    • Client “opens” Application 1

    • Client station behaves exactly as master station
11
Application Client/Server
  • Distributed items

    • Mimic displays (viewing & commands) with incorporated graph trends
    • Worksheets
    • Logs/Events views
    • Elementary data
12
Application Client/Server
  • TOPKAPI  Vision has originally been designed as an application Client/Server system for remote communications, that is why it brings:

    • Communication efficiency
    • Data transfer optimization
    • Automatic update of remote client configuration
  • … but also the benefits of a built-in system:

  • Redundancy
    • Automatic switching
    • Full data storage recovery
    • Easy configuration

  • Shared processing
    • Unique application
    • Performance
    • Reliability

13

14
Time stamped data
  • Automatic download of time-stamped data (differential: only new)
  • Only the connected units are scanned (optimized polling)
  • Data storage performed as if data had been acquired locally (Merge process)

  • TOPKAPI does not store the RTUs' raw value, but the value as it has been customized for the display: data configuration is UNIQUE for real time and time-stamped.
  • Alarms and events displays with time of the event (stored by the RTU), and computer reception time (i.e. the time the operator has been advised)
